It’s fine to bar your girlfriend’s irksome voice every now and then, but you may have a problem that needs to be dealt with if you are completely incapable of hearing it. You may wish to increase the loudness of your TV or your stereo, but don’t convince yourself that you don’t have a problem if you cannot hear anything at a regular volume. Admit it, you are experiencing hearing loss. Better do something about it before it’s too late.

Loss of hearing is not unusual to those in the baby boomers generation, or plainly those approaching the retirement age. Studies show that a great percentage of this generation has a decrease in their hearing ability. Depending on how grave the situation is or how involved one in doing something about it, loss of hearing can be avoided or decreased.

For those in the younger age section, hearing loss is either obtained during early childhood or picked up as they grow up. And we all know how kids and not-so-young kids lose their hearing. Some causes include self-inflicting the symptoms on themselves, although unwittingly. Listening to loud music, unhealthy dieting, and poor hygienics are just some of it.

But of course when you already can’t hear anything, you know you’ve lost your auditory sense. Permanent hearing loss isn’t obtained immediately, though. Unless one obtains it through an accident. Before it becomes absolute, it will give you clues that you are going to experience it.

Hearing muted sounds is one of the symptoms. It’s different if you intentionally don’t listen to your mother’s lecture, but not hearing it, particularly since she screams each word, is a mark of the problem. If this is just a one time problem, maybe you are just having a cold, an ear infection, sinusitis, or other sickness. But this may lead to a permanent loss of hearing if you experience this on regularly.

Youth nowadays increase the volume of their iPod or TV in an astonishing level. While it seems insignificant today, that may not be the case to you. If you think you increase the volume not because you want it that way or because you just got used to it, then you may be doing it because you have to hear it. Perhaps you already have damaged hearing.

Do you have difficulty identifying backdrop noise from the main voice? This symptom is one of the most recognizable symptoms of loss of hearing. When you have a difficulty picking out the voice of the person who is speaking to you from the rest of the noise of the room, then you are in trouble.

Also, you may be having troubles with your hearing if you hear an endless ringing sound in your ears. That annoying ringing sound that doesn’t seem to go away when you want it is called tinnitus. Many people who who tinnitus also lose their hearing afterwards.

Don’t delay going to an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) doctor or an otolaryngologist if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms.. Don’t let the situation get worse. Your condition may still be saved if you go to the physician as soon as possible. An ENT physician would know what treatment is best to avoid or heal the problem. Note that not all are treatable or even avoidable, but with the use of hearing aids and other technology, you can be assured that you won’t be totally left in silence.
