Getting into a cosmetology career means a variety of things. If it’s what you choose to do, then you can expect to be doing other people’s hair, nails, or whatever beauty needs they have. If you find that you have a particular talent, then you always have the option to make that your target career goal.
To get anywhere with it, though, you’ll need the schooling. For starters, it’s only a few months up to a year, but that’s for the bare minimum. It will get you a job in most places doing a wide variety of things, which may be exactly what you’re looking for. If it’s not, however, then you can always go back to school to learn more about whatever you feel is your area of expertise.
Should you decide that there’s a certain aspect of cosmetology that you’re good at, you can specialize and learn a great deal more. Specializing this way costs more money, takes more time, and is by no means required, but it can help to give you the tools you need to be the best that you wish to be. This also has an impact on the types of places you work as well as the pay you receive from them, of course.
Speaking of money, every cosmetologist differs. It’s not just about where you work or where you live, although those are major factors, bit it’s mainly about the tips you get. Most cosmetologists base their entire yearly salary on the tips they collect, as they make up half of that total salary if not more. The other major factor is the kind of work you do. That means if you work in a hair salon and just cut hair all day, you’re probably not looking at a lot of money, but if you’re doing makeup for runway models, then that kind of contract is likely to get you a bigger paycheck.
Whatever your area of expertise ends up being, or whatever job you decide to take, you can bet that it’ll be around for good. That’s one of the greatest things about cosmetology: career security and stability. People need their hair cut or makeup done, and they always will, so no matter what happens in the world or to you, you’ll always have this to count on. Your job can be further secured by specializing and learning a lot more about the kinds of things that are here to stay.
A typical work week, like the pay, is completely variable. It depends not only on what you do, but where you work. Obviously, if you run your own business, then the hours you put in are entirely up to you, though chances are you’ll be working long hours (as with any entrepreneur). Alternatively, if you have a contract to do makeup for runway models, it will probably be on a need basis and only be for a few weeks or months, so you’ll see a lot less work time.
It doesn’t take much to get into it. The schooling is quick as well as inexpensive, and your license says a lot about your capabilities. They have solid standings in the job market, so once you get in, chances are pretty good that you’ll have something to do for the rest of your life. The pay may not be all that high, but if you can manage it, either through tips, specific contracts, or running your own business, that can come easily too.
Is a cosmetology career right for you? Consider all that has been discussed and decide for yourself. There’s a lot to it, and it’s not hard to get the tools you’ll need to get there. More importantly, it’s not hard to go above and beyond the field to get nearly any job you want. What you make of your particular career is up to you, but so long as the field of beauty styling is something that appeals to you, then the rest is pretty much as grand as your imagination makes it.
