There is a surplus of advice on how to get in the best shape of your life. The main issue here, however, is that said information can be quite bad.

Thus, without further ado, here are 6 exercise misconceptions that you have to know about:

1. Pumping yourself up is all in your head: Well, actually, having some type of pre workout ritual gets your adrenal medulla pumping adrenalin. Moreover, you can trigger the SA node on your heart with psychological anticipation.

2. You should drink a shake during exercise: For most people this is a waste of time and money. Unless you are exercising for more than an hour, which I don’t recommend, you do not need to drink diluted carbohydrates mixed with protein.

3. Your max heart rate can be manipulated: The only thing that can change your hearts maximum rate is how old you are. Other than this, you cannot change your max heart rate by an appreciable degree. But what you can change is your resting heart rate which is an indication of heart health.

4. Low carb diets are the best for fat loss: This is only true for a select minority of people, those with insulin resistance. And keep in mind that low carb within the medical community does not mean no carb. Thus, even if you are insulin resistant, you don’t have to eliminate all carbs from your diet for the best fat loss.

5. Cardio is the best modality for increasing heart health: Cardio definitely does a great job at increasing heart health by making the left ventricle more voluminous. However, strength training also does a great job at increasing the wall size of your heart’s chambers. So include both for maximum heart health.

6. You should not try to isolate specific muscles: If you want to achieve maximum tone is an area of your body, you have to target that specific area. Not only is this common sense, but research has shown that you can increase IGF-1 locally. Even better, reduce overall body fat in addition to your isolation exercises.

There are tomes of information on how to increase fitness and lose weight. Unfortunately, for the average person, separating the wheat from the chaff can be virtually impossible. So take action on this great information sooner rather than later!

The era of the ultimate and real gung fu was about 1975 to 1985, give or take a few years. Of course, the time period could probably include the time period of 1985 to 1995, because that is when those movies hit the late night TV circuit. And, of course, chop sockies forever, because we can now get them on Amazon, though we should make sure it is a clean copy and that we have a good DVD player.

One could make argument that Bruce Lee provided the first kung fu flick with Enter the Dragon, and they wouldn’t be wrong, for his movies started the flood of kung fu flicks in America. The first real chop sockie kung fu flick, however, would have to be Five Fingers of Death, with the amazing and inspiring Lo Lieh. Lo Lieh, who thrust his broken fingers into cauldrons of red hot stones until he could inflict a terrible revenge.

The main chop sockie movie maker, though there were hundreds of movie makers during those years, would be the Shaw Brothers. They churned out thousands of these flicks, and they convinced the world that if you had an idea and believed in yourself, you could learn real Shaolin gung fu. The main man of Shaw Brothers productions was a young star name of Gordon Liu.

Gordon Liu knew real gung fu, and rumor has it he was adopted into a family of movie makers. One brother was the director of his magnificent masterworks, and the other brother was involved with stunt work. I think that was how it all worked out.

Among Mr. Liu’s incredible movies, and I will name three of them here, was The Master Killer, also known as Thirty Six Chambers of Death. Mr. Liu always played endearing fools, tilting at windmills, who, through Kung Fu, somehow reigned supreme by the last reel. The Master Killer was his entry into the field of kung fu flicks, and it propelled him right to the top.

One of his gems was Return to the 36th Chamber, where he plays, surprise of surprises, an endearing fool. The plot is silly, the acting is farcical, but the idea that one can learn kung fu from the common tasks of life is incredible. And, when our bumbling fool returns to his village, entirely disillusioned, only to find out what those nefarious monks have done to him…well, the phrase ‘I Do Know Kung Fu’ becomes a clarion call and inspiration to all kung fu students everywhere.

My favorite of Gordon Liu’s movies is an epic titled Fists of the White Lotus. Our endearing fool is betrayed, practices his moves for ten years so he can have revenge, only to find out that the bad guy has also had ten years to practice his moves. This movie inspired Bak Mei of Kill Bill fame (played by Gordon Liu) and far outshadows such well meaning epics as Crouching Tiger and Kill Bill and that ilk.

The originals movies, you see, provide innocence and inspiration that are undeniable. You want to learn the real stuff of gung fu? Go find these movies, be inspired, and live life the way real heroes live it.

Roller Derby was never really a big deal in the US, but has been around forever and was a staple of the early days of television. It was similar in its promotional format to its better known “sports entertainment” cousin, professional wrestling. It was frequently seen in the same bad timeslots on the same low powered UHF TV stations, and it was run by the same loose confederation of promoters and businessmen that characterized the regional territory era of pro wrestling. That’s where the similarity to wrestling ends–it’s storylines made pro wrestling angles look like high drama. While there is a definite history to the sport–great teams like the LA T-Birds and Bay Bombers, and legendary skaters like Ann Calvello it never really stuck in the public consciousness like the pre-Hulk Hogan era of pro wrestling.

New era roller derby reached a national audience through the A&E reality series Roller Girls. It featured a local, all-girl roller derby league in Austin, Texas and followed the lives of the players on and off the track. While the show was oddly engaging, it was the first clue that many had that such a league existed in the first place. A sport that was never taken seriously to begin with and that was really living on borrowed time since the’60’s before fading into the lowest level of obscurity had been rediscovered and embraced by an eclectic group of young women. They had kept the same essential format, thrown in a healthy dose of burlesque camp and Varga pin-up inspired glamour and made it into their own vibrant subculture. They changed some of the nomenclature and competitive format–in lieu of regularly scheduled games they renamed the competitions “bouts” a la MMA or boxing. The result was a compelling mixture of glamour, toughness and athleticism driven by a healthy dose of punk rock “do it yourself” mentality.

Today, roller derby is a full blown worldwide phenomenon. There are hundreds of local roller derby leagues not only in the United States, but Canada, Australia and Europe. Most of the local groups similarly play up the campy retro pin-up/hot rod iconography and everyone involved sure looks like they’re having a good time. Between teams there’s a vibe of good natured competitiveness and camaraderie.

This organic rebirth and growth of roller derby is a result of young women taking what essentially was TV time filler and made it into their own distaff ‘action sport’. The roller derby circa 2009 is a matriarchal success story. No one is in it for the money, as these local groups are typically run as non-profit organization. The women involved have recreated this sport, and run it, promote it and compete in it on their own terms.

The new generation rollergirls also pay homage to their sports’ pioneers much in the same way that skateboarders give props to Duane Peters and Tony Alva. Many of the individual group websites have sections devoted to the history of roller derby, and the late Ann Calvello–regarded as the Queen of the original Roller Derby–is revered as something of a patron saint. The Texas Rollergirl group featured in the A&E series has renamed their championship the Calvello Cup.

Since their origination, ellipticals have been considered to be one of the most safe, as well as efficient, exercise machines on the market. With overwhelming enthusiasm by consumers, elliptical makers have found themselves with constant demand for their product. Because of this, elliptical machines are now taken very seriously in the exercise world, and are considered one of the highest quality products in the machine industry.

That said, ellipticals are still only representing a small portion of the home exercise machine industry. Even though they have been widely accepted in health clubs and gyms, they are not considered as popular in homes. This is most likely because they are considered to be less portable than other (more expensive) home gym equipment.

The deals are out there on elliptical machines, you just need to know where to look. If you really want the best home cardio workout each and every day, then you need to know how to find an elliptical that fits your budget. Here are a few ideas to help you in your search.

Retail outlets are often able to cut you a great deal. Whether it is because of a discount model that they have overstocked, or because they have elliptical machines that have been used by customers as display items, it is possible to get that special deal nobody else thinks to ask for. Often times you can get 30% off of a quality product.

Another quality place to look for ellipticals is at sport stores that carry used products or scratch and dent stores. It is always a good idea to do a little bit of research before even showing up at a second hand store. Give different companies like these a call and ask them what they have available, the model type, and the quality of the product.

Staying ahead of the competition is crucial for the success of a fitness center. They do this mainly by updating their equipment on a consistent basis. This leaves a great opportunity for consumers looking for a discount product to call and ask if and when they are upgrading, and roughly how much their old equipment would cost.

Ellipticals are available right around the corner. Just use these tips to find the perfect one that fits your budget!

The least you can do for your body is to look after it after all it does for you. By using natural health techniques that have almost been lost over time it is possible to improve our overall health and efficiency by using natural products which do not upset our body’s equilibrium. There is no reason why we should always wait for something bad to happen when in most circumstances we can prevent it by adopting certain ways.

You need to understand that if you want to be part of the natural health community, then you must be dedicated to making your life and especially your body healthy. As much as many people would have you believe otherwise, natural health is not something that is a cult or something that should be ridiculed. Looking after your body naturally requires a number of factors be considered including where you live and work.

This article cannot possibly give all the facts so a certain responsibility lies with you to continue learning more about it through books or on the multitude of websites dedicated to natural health. This is not a short lived craze because increasing numbers of people realize that we should not be as unhealthy as we are and are taking steps to rectify this situation. You can guarantee that although it may take a little while, once you have stopped eating a diet based exclusively on junk that you will slowly begin to feel much better.

For those of you that this scenario relates to then either start eating better or start looking into what supplements you need to start taking to make up the deficiency your current diet is causing. When you realize just how you are treating your body you will begin to understand that a whole lot of options are open to you. They say knowledge is power and in this instance the knowledge will give you the power to change your life for the better.

Of course this is much a philosophy as it is a way of living. However, being healthy isn’t just about stopping sickness as a healthy body is one that is more active and where a person enjoys increased energy and vitality levels. If you truly want to succeed in this path it will require a commitment you may not have shown in any other part of your life previously but being healthy is your choice.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting has just about finished boxing. With MMA groups like Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Pride and WEC the level of skill and excitement has risen way above anything boxing can produce.

Boxing was once upon a time, a multi-million dollar business with the best boxers in the world providing excitement ring. People all over the world would sit around there TV watching the fight of the year. Then a decade or so later we had heavy weights like Iron Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. They were big exciting boxers that pounded each other. They usually provided good action and knockouts. After these boxers retired or faded out we lost boxers with size and moved to boxers with skill like Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather etc. This era of boxing was great but it always ended in a decision. It started to take the fun out of watching boxing and people were getting tired of paying good money for a non entertaining fight and no ending with a KO.

Then in 90s along comes this Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament where eight men are pitted against each other in a caged octagon ring, with a winner at the end of the night winning the tournament. There were only two rules, no eye gouging and no biting. You could do anything else to win. To get the win you either knocked your opponent out or submitted him. There were many different styles of fighting, anywhere from Kung Fu, to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, to Muay Thai and Bar Room Brawling. Thats why its so entertaining because anybody who had fighting experience had a chance. When it first started there were a lot of mismatched though! At the end of the day though, this was great entertainment to audiences. People started paying to watch these fights and with the media putting a negative spin on it, UFC blew up. In 2001 the UFC was sold to new owners and Dana White was named president.

Dana White is responsible for making UFC and other MMA events so popular today. He changed the fighting rules, so it would be less barbaric and also so that there were two fighters competing for the win, instead of a tournament style fight. Also there would be 6-7 fights on a pay-per-view event. So that means on a pay-per-view event you have the chance to see 6-7 people get knocked out or submitted. Unlike boxing where you watch 12 rounds of boxing to get a bad decision.

Dana White decided to increase the popularity of UFC even more by introducing The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality show in which the winner gets a contract to fight in the UFC and a shot at stardom. This show has a firm grip on guys in the age range of 18-34. It has been recorded that, in this age range, the shows ratings have surpassed NBA and MLB playoffs. As for the pay-per-view money, in 2006 the UFC made $223M, HBO made $177M and WWE made $200M. Dana Whites definitely doing something right. Fighters are getting more popular than ever as their fan base increases. With popular fighters like Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz and Lyota Machida

So why is UFC more popular than Boxing? Its simple. The UFC offer fast paced action which usually ends in a submission or Knockout. Instead of watching 12 long rounds of Boxing just to end in a decision. One of the great things in MMA is you just never know whos going to win. All it takes is someone to get a lucky shot in and his opponent drops like a sack of potatoes. Boxing hasnt produced that in a long time. Thats not to say UFC doesnt have its faults.

At the end of the day, UFC is offering viewers what they want. I think boxing will be around for a few more years but MMA will beat boxing out of business sooner rather than later.
